That evening we had wondered if he'd better watch his words. We didn't know how things worked, and there were all sorts of people present. "It doesn't matter," Tiziano had said, apparently exhausted: "my views are known." It is illegal for Chinese people to have unauthorized contact with foreigners. ''How can So-and-So visit you so often?" I'd asked Angela. This lovely, gentle woman regarded me for a second before she answered: "He has nothing to lose. They have already taken from him his family and his work. Now he doesn't care what they do."
